To do this, Haigh chronicles some pivotal events in the lives of people on both sides of the abortion issue. Set in Boston in the winter and spring of 2015, “Mercy Street” offers a complex portrayal of the many ways a woman arrives at her decision to continue or terminate her pregnancy, while also capturing the broader political and cultural tumult that preceded the 2016 presidential campaign. “Mercy Street” joins other novels that, in recent years, have examined this topic from different viewpoints, such as Joyce Carol Oates’ philosophical “A Book of American Martyrs,” Leni Zumas’ dystopian “Red Clocks” and Brit Bennett’s nuanced “The Mothers.” 1), is about the charged and - given the recent state and Supreme Court rulings - very timely issue of abortion. Her previous novel, “ Heat and Light,” about the ruinous effects of fracking on a rural Pennsylvania town, was not only well-researched, it contained multifaceted characters and storylines, qualities that landed it on numerous Best Books of 2016 lists. This is not the case with Jennifer Haigh’s fiction. When a novelist takes on a big, divisive issue, there’s a risk that the result will read like a polemic. Horton is an instantly recognisable Dr Seuss story - with all the fun, fizz and frivolity - but it has a special added something: soul. Once I had tuned in to Seuss's particular language (and it takes some practice), I realised this was storytelling of the highest order.īut it wasn't until we fell upon Horton Hatches the Egg, first published in 1940, that my girls and I were truly converted. There must be more to their reading list than Amber the Orange Fairy and Angelina Ballerina. When it came to bringing up two little girls of my own - they are now five and three - I resolved to bring Dr Seuss into their lives for the very same reasons that I had turned up my nose at him in childhood. Nadya is obviously supposed to be the hero of the story, but Serefin takes a little longer for you to feel the same way about him, and you honestly don’t know what to think about Malachiasz the boy is an enigma. It starts off as a typical good-vs.-evil type of story, but as you read on, you realize its more of a group of morally grey characters, which to me, always makes for a more interesting story. It’s got some Russian (Kalyazin) and Polish (Tranavia) inspiration in the ways of the two sparring countries, and fellow readers are really drawn to the different types of religions and how they’ve been such a huge driving force of the larger, outer conflict this story represents. This book speaks quite heavily on psychical and psychological abuse. You can thank me later.Īs for the review, let me start off by mentioning some trigger warnings. So good, I wanted more! I didn’t want it to end! □□Īdd this to your TBR. I just loved this and I’m so glad it stayed that way with each reread. Supportive friends also made a world of difference in their lives. He was extremely fortunate to have been adopted into a loving home but the traces of abuse still linger in him years later. Rev’s parents stood out to me even more upon this reread. She’s a teenager, going through a lot, does not have a stable home life, is already facing sexism from a young age and is being cyber bullied. She’s prickly, angry, the testament of ‘hurt people hurt people’ applies to her quite aptly. But there are some really heartwarming moments sprinkled in between that allows you to get through it.Ībuse is never really great to read about, but it’s especially difficult when a child goes through it at the hand of a parent and Rev has gone through what no one should have to go through.Įmma isn’t the most likeable heroine. I need Brigid Kemmerer to get back to writing some more contemporary stories.Īs much as it isn’t a pleasant story to read, it made me feel warm inside. New alliances and fresh conspiracies spawn as the fight for the Iron Throne continues… The fifth book in the most celebrated fantasy series of the 21st century arrives in a resplendent two-volume set. Tiptree's stories were dense flamboyant constructs, crammed to bursting with incident, humor, structural innovation, throwaway ideas and an intensity of feeling that could erupt into mawkishness when she did not have it under control. That Tiptree nevertheless developed an extravagant reputation as an uneven but remarkable writer was a triumph of art over artfulness. You could not liken her to Italo Calvino or Carlos Fuentes. These settings were not intended ironically, or "only" as metaphor Tiptree loved the forward momentum of narrative, and meant what she wrote. Tiptree embraced whole-heartedly the apparatus of science fiction: Her stories were of alien landings, galactic empires, time travel and strange worlds. Apologists were by then speaking of "speculative fiction" and "magic realism," but Tiptree's stories were, inescapably and almost embarrassingly, sci-fi. Self-effacing unto anonymity, she published science fiction stories for 20 years, writing exclusively for genre markets even after upscale magazines began publishing selected examples of sf around the mid-'70s. ALICE SHELDON (1915-1987), who wrote under the pseudonym James Tiptree Jr., made no claims for her art. “When the world looked to science to address the pandemic threat of COVID-19, the success of mRNA and other COVID-19 vaccine platforms undoubtedly saved tens of millions of lives. Professor Brendan Crabb AC, Director and CEO of Burnet Institute called the partnership with Moderna’s mRNA Access program a potential ‘game-changer’ for communities needing vaccines to prevent the devastating impact of infectious diseases. Should the results prove promising, Moderna will consider extending the partnership to help progress these candidates through clinical trials. Under the partnership agreement Moderna will provide expertise in designing mRNA vaccines for Burnet’s validated novel candidates in malaria, SARS-CoV-2 and hepatitis C.īurnet’s Vaccine Initiative (BVI) research team will provide vaccine antigens to be modified and optimised by Moderna and returned to the Institute as mRNA candidates ready to test in pre-clinical models. The COVID-19 pandemic has underlined the important role of mRNA vaccines, and innovative scientific thinking is now needed to tackle many of the other high-burden infectious diseases, including malaria which is responsible for the death of half a million people, mostly children, each year. Burnet Institute is to partner with world-leading mRNA vaccine manufacturer Moderna, through their cutting-edge mRNA Access program, to develop novel mRNA vaccines for a range of emerging and neglected infectious diseases aimed at improving the health of communities globally. |
